Movie Sanctuary

On the 3rd or 4th floor of the pink building ( I can't remember which one), we got a glimpse into the beginning of movie productions. I was able to watch a full short film without using a television or words. It was hundreds of small photos that you had to spin with a wheel and circulated the many photos in a specific order. I'm not 100% positive, but I believe it was about a group of men robbing a bank. Another part of the movie production that interested me, was the circular wheel you had to turn and you could see a a bird flying or a clown moving. I feel that the beginning of movie productions was very similar to the production of movies made with clay, today.

  1. You're definitely right about old movies being closely related to claymation, as they're both stop-motion films. It seems somewhat strange that anyone would continue doing this laborious work, yet it's still done regularly. I think one of the reasons I had such a hard time figuring out what was happening in that crank-film we watched was that the modern accepted methods of framing and pacing weren't developed yet and everything seemed off.

  2. Even though I did not see this part of the museum, I feel that it is interesting that they are presenting the information about the history of film through the medium itself. The frame by frame nature of cinematography is not clearly present today, but still does exist. As producers and directors still sift through certain pieces on a single frame basis to provide certain details that could be even minutely distracting from the rest of the film.

  3. The movie floor was really interesting. It helped me not to take the movies we have today for granted.
