I very much enjoyed the map article. It is strange that people used to think the world was flat and feared falling off the edge of it while sailing. The article also brought up that sailors did not know where they were going and therefore did not know how much food they would need. How many people died stuck on the ocean because they ran out of provisions and couldn't find the shore? I never considered that discovery could be so unknown!
We take so much of our scientific knowledge for granted and don't value the origin of it enough. Learning about the history of these discoveries through articles and guided tours has been incredibly eye-opening
ReplyDeleteI couldn't even imagine running out of food half way through a voyage. What happened? Did they start to eat other human beings on board. You can only go so long without food.
ReplyDeleteI feel that this is interesting as it relates a lot to the geographic disposition of continents and effects the possibilities for exploration. The Atlantic Ocean has limited travel and commerce for many centuries, and has varying cultural significance throughout different beliefs and religions. The fact that you may get hopelessly lost is indeed very terrifying to think about.
ReplyDeleteIt is strange to think of people not knowing that the world was spherical. I guess we must consider the technological and scientific advancements at that time and how those played a role in this belief.
